Course Overview
"Pearl at Kalauao"—formerly known and long cherished as Pearl Country Club—is a prestigious course situated in a beautiful location overlooking Pearl Harbor.
Established in 1967 by Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., the course became famous as the venue for the Pearl Open, where top players from both Japan and the U.S. competed. It also served as the home course for David Ishii, a renowned professional who enjoyed a successful career in Japan. In 2020, ownership was transferred to the Kamehameha Schools, and operations continue today with a mission focused on community contribution, international exchange, and junior golf development.
The course was designed by the renowned Japanese architect Akira Sato. Spanning the gentle slopes of the Koʻolau Mountain Range, this 18-hole, par-72 layout measures 6,787 yards; it features a strategic design with holes separated by abundant trees, offering a rich variety of challenges. The scenery is spectacular, providing panoramic views that encompass Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri, and the Waiʻanae Mountain Range stretching to the west.
In 2023, the course underwent a comprehensive renovation of its greens, replacing the existing Bermuda grass with Seashore Paspalum. This upgrade has resulted in more beautiful putting surfaces and an enhanced playing environment.
The greens, which feature a distinctive design that seems to drop off toward the ocean, can be quite challenging for beginners but offer a rewarding test of skill for intermediate and advanced players. The course is highly popular among locals, so early reservations are recommended, especially for weekends.
